2010-08-31 17:01:48Engineer plans to replace asphalt with PV cells for renewable energy
Eco Factor: Plan to install solar panels on highways. Scott Brusaw, an electrical engineer based in Sagle, Idaho, believes that adding solar panels on rooftops will only be able to generate up to 2 percent of the total electricity demands in the UK. Brusaw further opines that installing PV cells on highways is the way forward for renewable energy. The inventor plans to create 3.7m square panels that will slot together and link through junction boxes lying beneath them. With a US national average of around 4 hours of sunlight each day, each of these panels will be able to produce about 7.6KWh of electricity, which could either be fed into the grid or stored onsite to allow electric cars to recharge through roadside plug-in points. However, since photovoltaic panels are fragile, Brusaw has to think of a recipe to make these panels tough enough to withstand the relentless pounding that trucks and other traffic will throw at them. Covering panels with toughened glass is one option, but it leaves the issue of tire grip. Brusaw is planning to use thousands of tiny prisms built into the surface, which will allow tires to grid and will also help direct sunlight into the photovoltaic cells when the sun is low. CARDRONA, New Zealand - The USA made history Sunday as Tahoe Freeride athlete Brita Sigourney of Carmel, Calif., led a 1-2-3-4 women's sweep in the halfpipe of the FIS Freestyle Junior World Championships.Hannah Haupt Sun Valley, Idaho won silver with Devin Logan W. Dover, Vt. taking bronze. Walter Wood Snowmass Village, Colo. took silver behind men's winner Noah Bowman of Canada. Weather played a role as fresh snow and fog forced delays.Following the week of competition in New Zealand, the USA was also awarded the Marc Hodler Cup as the top team.A heavy overnight snowfall delayed start while the pipe was emptied of snow. But by 1 p.m., competition was underway for what was supposed to be a two-run final. The women's event was one rider short of completion and Logan, sitting in third, waited over two hours for a gap in the fog to complete her second run. But Mother Nature wasn't her side and the women's event reverted to a one run final.Copyright 2010 Sierra Sun. All rights reserved. BOISE, Idaho - Kellen Moore is uniquely indistinguishable. He's modest and reserved, unlikely to draw attention to himself. At 6-feet tall and 186 pounds, he hardly looks the part of a football hero.Yet much like the Boise State team he leads, Moore is so much more than the sum of his part, an undersized and overlooked small-town kid who has turned out to be Heisman Trophy contender."He's a very calm person who does his homework so when he gets into tough situations he goes back to his basics and keeps it simple," said his brother Kirby, a sophomore receiver for the third-ranked Broncos. In two years as Boise State's starting quarterback, Kellen Moore has thrown for more than 7,000 yards and 64 touchdowns with just 13 interceptions. Last year, his 39 touchdowns to three interceptions was the best ratio in NCAA history. He was a third-team AP All-American.Maybe the most impressive number Moore has racked up is this: 27-1. 0000-08-30 00:00:00WAC demands $5M from both Nevada, Fresno State
DENVER - The Western Athletic Conference is demanding a $5 million exit fee by Oct. 25 from Fresno State and Nevada, which are bolting to the Mountain West Conference.WAC commissioner Karl Benson said the league would sue the universities if they don't pay up. He also said the league won't let the schools leave until after the 2011-12 season.Fresno State and Nevada were informed of the WAC's hardline stance by letter on Friday. The schools announced Aug. 18 they would join the MWC. Because they didn't announce their decisions prior to a June 30 deadline required by WAC bylaws, neither school can leave for two years unless the league agrees to an early exit.Benson said that by leaving before 2012, Fresno State and Nevada would cost each of the remaining WAC schools - Hawaii, Idaho, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, San Jose State, Utah State - $2 million or more.Copyright 2010 Tahoe Daily Tribune.
